Professor of criminal law and criminology

Catrien Bijleveld was appointed to the Council in December 2019. In addition to her position as Professor of Research Methods in Criminology at VU Amsterdam, Professor Bijleveld has been the director of the Netherlands Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) since 2014. She is also a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Bijleveld’s work focuses mainly on criminal careers, and she has conducted experimental research into the effectiveness of interventions, juvenile sex offenders, historical trends and the intergenerational transmission of delinquent behaviour.

  • Chair of the steering and evaluation committee for an experiment involving a closed marijuana dispensary chain
  • Past President of the European Society of Criminology (present – September 2023)
