Trained as historian, Marthe Hesselmans obtained her PhD from Boston University on the role of religion in ethnic conflict. Before her doctoral research, she worked for the Social Science Research Council in New York and several international non-profits in the fields of ethnic conflict, community resilience and reconciliation.

In recent years, Hesselmans worked as researcher and policy advisor at the Van Mierlo Foundation, the think tank of the Dutch political party D66. Among her publications are New in Europe: A vision on migration (2018)Kansengelijkheid is toe aan herkansing [A new opportunity for equal opportunity] (2019) and Racial integration in the church of apartheid (2018).

At the WRR, Marthe Hesselmans looks at how companies can contribute to public interests for the Business and Society project. She also co-authored the publication Vulnerability and resilience. WRR reflections on the long-term consequences of the COVID-19 crisis (2020).

Marthe Hesselmans is also Research Fellow Governance of Migration and Diversity at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
