Good accesible care is a great good in the Netherlands, which contributes to rising life expectancy and the number of years spent in good health.

At what price?

But our care system also comes at a price. Technological developments and social developments such as the ageing society and associated changing demand for care (rising proportion of chronically sick people, age-related disorders) are a major driver for the rising costs. The tension between sustainability and solidarity in the care system is a societal problem that is as pertinent as ever. Given the importance and complexity of the sustainability of care expenditure, the Dutch government endorses the need for an overarching report on the sustainability of care costs in the long term.
