Navigating a Fragmenting World order published in Springer Series
The publication Navigating a Fragmenting World Order has been released by Springer. This work is a translated and adapted version of the WRR report Nederland in een fragmenterende wereldorde, which was published in 2024.
In this report, the WRR concludes that the era in which the Netherlands could easily count on an international context favorable to its interests has come to an end. Profound shifts in global relations are underway, and the shape of the emerging world order remains uncertain. Increasingly, tensions will arise between interests that are traditionally and fundamentally vital to the Netherlands: security, values, and prosperity.
Since the report’s release, geopolitical developments have continued unabated. U.S. policy under Trump’s second presidency has shaken markets and governments worldwide to their core. NATO member states, under considerable pressure, have decided to raise their defense budgets to 5%. Meanwhile, rather than being resolved, major violent conflicts—such as those in Ukraine and Gaza—appear to be escalating further.
Springer Series: Research for Policy
This series features internationally relevant studies by the WRR. After all, many issues facing the Netherlands do not stop at its borders. WRR publications aim to reformulate policy objectives and open new perspectives, grounded in scientific research and analysis. With the Research for Policy series, the WRR seeks to enrich public debate abroad.
The publication Navigating a Fragmenting World Order is available free of charge on Springer’s website, or can be ordered as a deluxe hardcover edition for purchase. A separate summary of the report can be found here.
