WRR report nominated for Internet Innovation Award 2016
The WRR report ‘The public core of the Internet. Towards a foreign Internet policy’ (De publieke kern van het internet. Naar een buitenlands internetbeleid) has been nominated for the Internet Innovation Award 2016. The prize is awarded annually by the Internet Society of the Netherlands (ISOC) for innovative and interesting Dutch initiatives relating to the Internet.
Public core of the Internet
In this report, the WRR argues that the protocols and standards which together make up the basic infrastructure of the Internet should be regarded as a global public good. The Internet is of great socio-economic significance for the Netherlands, and it is therefore very important to safeguard the functioning and integrity of the public core of the Internet and to protect it from inappropriate interventions by states and other parties. The WRR calls for the Internet to be made a priority in foreign policy and formulates recommendations for a diplomatic agenda.
Nominees
In addition to the WRR report, a further nine initiatives have been nominated for the Award. A jury of experts will present the Award during the New Year gathering of ISOC in Amsterdam on 14 January 2016. The jury members are Erik Huizer (SURF), Valerie Frissen (SIDN fund), Astrid Oosenburg (PvdA), Marjolijn Bonthuis (ECP) and Teun Gautier (Publeaks).
