Arthur van Riel studied Economic History at Leiden University and Freie Universität Berlin. Parallel to working at the Scientific Council he is Professor of Historical Political Economy at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Previously he has held posts at VU University Amsterdam, Utrecht University, the Netherlands Economic Institute (Ecorys) and the Dutch Ministry of Finance. He has published on a range of topics, including Dutch economic history during the early modern period, government policy and industrialization in the 19th century, and contemporary national and European economic policy.
